Two positive items to report:
1. SB 444 has passed and will take effect mid-June. This provides confidentiality for emergency service providers in using Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) services as well as limits on liability for CISM team members. Confidentiality can be waived if the Officer appears to be an imminent threat to himself or others as well as when an Officer of his legal representative waives confidentiality. Information about CISM services can be found at the website of the Michigan Crisis Response Association at www.mcrainc.net. It is advisable to discuss protocols for using CISM services with command staff/employer.
2. The package of Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) bills has been voted to the House Floor and will likely see action soon. Most importantly, the bills put into statute the seats on MCOLES for Police Officers Labor Council (POLC) and Michigan Association of Police (MAP) and restore the Detroit Police Officers Association (DPOA) seat. Because technical changes were made to the bills, the Senate will have to concur and Senate leadership has indicated that will happen promptly.
