Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of their K9 officers.

Nero, a 7-year-old Belgian Tervuren, was found dead at a kennel where he was being boarded June 27. A necropsy (animal autopsy) was performed and the Sheriff’s Department was informed Nero passed away due to complications of bloat, which causes the dog’s stomach to twist or rotate, said Berrien County Undersheriff Chuck Heit.

A memorial service is expected to be planned. Details will be posted here when finalized.
