Governor lifts outdoor capacity limits June 1, broad mask order July 1

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the state is lifting all outdoor capacity limits June 1, while maintaining the Mask and Gatherings Order.

Indoor capacity will be limited to 50 percent for all gatherings effective June 1. The broad Mask and Gatherings Order is expected to be lifted July 1, unless unanticipated circumstances arise.

The state is following CDC guidance allowing fully vaccinated people indoors without masks. Whitmer stressed that unvaccinated individuals are required to wear masks indoors through the end of June.

She also said business owners and workplaces are within their rights to require masks after July 1.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released an updated Mask and Gatherings Order May 24, which is expected to include separate schools guidance. Also, May 24, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) will provide an updated plan, which eliminates the requirement for employees to work remotely if their jobs can be done remotely.
