POLC/GELC 2020 Conference canceled

Posted by: jgomori Posted date: June 5, 2020

In times like these, tough decisions must be made. Keeping all of you, our valued members, and your best interest in mind, we are disappointed to report that our 2020 POLC/GELC Annual Conference & Labor Seminar, scheduled for October 21-23, has been canceled. Due to safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Executive Board made this difficult decision in order to reduce your risk to potential exposure.

Current executive orders, as well as state reopening plans, include social distancing guidelines and suggested face coverings. The health and safety of our membership is our greatest priority. Medical experts continue to stress their concerns regarding a resurgence of COVID-19 cases this fall. This weighed heavily into our decision. Even if large indoor gatherings are permitted, the thought of maintaining a six-foot social distance would be difficult at best, if not impossible. Additionally, the wearing of face coverings would be intrusive and limit the ability for great communication.

The Labor Council wants to ensure that we recognize our Public Safety Personnel for their outstanding service, especially during these unprecedented times. Because of COVID-19, simply risking your lives to do this job has taken on a whole new list of dangers and an additional meaning never considered in past years. Please be assured that the Outstanding Service Award recipients for 2020, who are traditionally honored at the annual conference, will receive their awards and will be honored in an appropriate manner.

We want to thank all of our valued POLC/GELC first responders as well as all of our public employees for your commitment to putting Michigan residents first. I commit to you that we WILL continue to advocate on your behalf and will be continuing to collaborate with your employers to strive towards the safest working conditions for each and every one of you.

In solidarity-
