Washington Report – Sept. 11, 2017

NAPO members are encouraged to help fellow officers who have damaged or destroyed homes due to Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey; In a victory for NAPO, the Senate passed the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship Act (S. 597), which would eliminate the expected family contribution (EFC) used to determine financial need in the case of a Pell Grant-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty; NAPO met with House Judiciary Committee staff to discuss the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (H.R. 2228) passed unanimously by the Senate and is hoping to use the fact that September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month to pressure the House Judiciary Committee to take up and move this important bill; Register to join NAPO’s Fall Seminar: Navigating the new Union Environment; and NAPO worked with legislators to introduce an amendment (#109) to H.R. 3354 to provide $100 million in funding for the COPS Hiring Program.
