Whitmer’s order requires public safety officers wear face masks with some exceptions

Customers must confirm medical reasons for non-compliance

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order which requires public safety officers to wear face coverings, with exceptions, and businesses to ask customers for confirmation of their medical reason for not wearing a mask.

Executive Order 2020-153 clarifies mask rules established in Executive Order 2020-147. The exception for public safety officers wearing a mask is if the face covering seriously interferes with them doing their job.

The five primary exceptions to wearing a face covering inside public places or outdoors in crowded areas where social distancing is not possible are:

  • People who cannot medically tolerate face coverings.
  • People exercising in a way that wearing a mask would interfere with the activity.
  • Children younger than age five.
  • Individuals eating or drinking while seated in a food service establishment.
  • Voters at a polling place during an election.
